High Theory | Pacific Festival: OC Recap
September 9, 2011
http://gethightheory.blogspot.com/

A hazy day in Orange County in August set the stage for the expo of high spirits and unbound senses that was the 2011 Pacific: OC Festival organized by Collaborative Media and Orange County-native and electro-kingpin Steve Aoki.

The rest of the evening is a bit indiscernible for me – I was continually being blasted to the moon by Jacques Renault, Toro y Moi, Fred Falke, Bag Raiders, Cosmic Kids, Zoot Woman, Classixx, and The Twelves! Really this was an immense lineup that blew Oak Canyon Ranch into the stratosphere.

August 26, 2011
http://www.buzzinemusic.com/interviews/music-interview-aaron-behrens-thomas-turner-ghostland-observatory-codename-rondo-08262011

The Austin, Texas-based duo of Aaron Behrens and Thomas Turner first played together in a band called Waking Helix, forming the basis for what would become Ghostland Observatory when using their former band’s rehearsal space to try out some new ideas when their former band-mates were away on a holiday break in late 2002. Over the subsequent years, Aaron and Thomas have established a near legendary reputation for their frenetic live shows based around Thomas’s costumed skills behind the synths, drums, and keys, coupled with Aaron’s front-of-stage prowling accompanied by microphone and guitar. On recent tours, their efforts have been further enhanced by a simply spectacular laser light show which has to be seen to be believed. Buzzine’s Stefan Goldby made a pilgrimage out to the shores of Irvine Lake in Orange County, California to chat with the boys before their appearance alongside Snoop Dogg at the 2011 Pacific Festival…

August 22, 2011
http://www.wearerebels.com/2011/08/22/pacific-festival-recap/#1

Orange County, usually tormented for the lack of quality festivals and overly platinum-blonde broads, was given a second chance this past weekend. Held in Oak Canyon Ranch, overlooking the outskirts of Irvine Lake, the second annual Pacific Festival brought a collective of over 50 live acts and dj’s, giving Orange County a staple supply of music to fiend for. From Toro Y Moi, The Twelves, Fred Falke, Black Lips, Classixx, Bag Raiders, Cut Copy and Snoop Dog, Pacific Festival delivered an eclectic lineup of talent through three main stages, the ‘Shagadellica’ bus covered in faux-fur and Red Bull’s own, custom-fitted mix truck. http://www.thingstodoinlandempire.com/pacific-festival-oc-2011-review/

The competition is tight for new music festivals in Southern California.  In it’s second year, Pacific Festival: OC is a promising addition with the capacity to grow.  The crowds were treated to a diverse and rich music offering.  Much anticipate acts included !!! (CHK CHK CHK), Calvin Harris (who also did a set with Steve Aoki), Ghostland Observatory, Toro y Moi, and Black Lips.  Phantogram played a great set in the mid afternoon, after which we joined Steve Aoki and his energetic fan base.  His excellent performace certainly won him over some new admirers.

After Calvin Harris got the party starting on the main stage, Steve Aokicontinued the party with his bangers ranging from “Turbulence” to his stellar remix of “Pursuit of Happiness.” He had by far the greatest stage presence.

After seeing Aoki, I scrambled over to see Aussie house duo Bag Raiders. They were one of the up-and-coming acts I was most excited to see. What I didn’t expect was that their sound would be so exceptional, not only with the instrumentals but the vocals as well.

The much-anticipated Pacific Festival took place at Lake Irvine in what is technically Silverado, CA Saturday, August 13 2011.  We don’t really care what you call it.  It was closer than Coachella and more rural; a nice respite from the city.  The sun had just set at Toro y Moi took the stage making for spectacular views and groovy music while the light changed through the trees.  Wait, there were trees here!  It was beautiful.

For its second year, the day-long annual Pacific Festival held at a lakeside No Man’s Land in OC’s backcountry boasted a lineup of over 50 artists and bands across five stages. As Pac Fest newbies, after an intimate moment in a thorough frisking from security on the way in, we caught some evening acts and headliners including Bag Raiders, Ghostland Observatory, Snoop and Cut Copy. The best way to describe it is like a way, way, scaled down Coachella with less fake hippies and more bro guys (because it’s Orange County).  Even at the last two shows, Snoop followed by Cut Copy which ran til almost 2am, there were manks aplenty in the audience.  The Dog Father had probably just had five blunts to the face when he and his sweet Uncle Junebug took the stage during which he talked about smoking weed at least four times outside of his song lyrics AND did a little Nate Dogg tribute. Cut Copy put on an incredible set to close out the night (and the final stop on their tour before heading back to Australia) with songs from each of their albums. Despite having been on the road performing for the last several months, Dan Whitfordhad every bit of energy on stage as he did when we saw them perform in April at Coachella, maybe even more. We’ll definitely be attending Pacific Fest next year. Until then, enjoy these photos from the night…

Kroq | [Review] Pacific Festival OC Featuring Ghostland Observatory, Snoop Dogg, !!!, And More
August 18, 2011
http://kroq.radio.com/2011/08/15/review-pan-pacific-festival-featuring-ghostland-observatory-snoop-dogg-and-more/

This weekend, we drove to the idyllic Lake Irvine to catch the second year of the Pacific Festival: Orange County. All signs for fest-success were a go : the weather was perfect, the crowd exceedingly good-looking (Quicksilver kids – with tail-end-of-summer tans, neon shades, and hippie trinkets), the line-up decently stacked, and the energy tuned up when we arrived around 4:30 PM. Our day started out with a kick – watching !!! (Chk Chk Chk). Lead singer Nic Offer came on stage just in time to jump off of it- doing his usual jangly mating dance + eat-the-microphone routine, then sashaying through the crowd. Teamed with the psychedelic dance-funk of his bandmates, Offer’s fish-out-of-water dance moves proved as contagious as they were hilariously awkward.  Next, we caught two artists we’re putting on the ‘pay more attention to/download now’ list: Phantogram is an electro-rock duo out of New York that crafts trip-hop rock – and the bookworm-meets-DJ cuties Toro Y Moi – with their airy electro chillwave. Both had a fleet of people grooving on the grass from dusk till darkness.  By the time Calvin “Ready For the Weekend” Harris took the main stage, the crowd was ready to take the party to a new level – aided by hundreds of rubber-ducky balloons and powerful waves of infectious dance beats.

Level 2 | The Beat Goes On: Pacific Festival
August 18, 2011
http://shop.pacsun.com/level2/tag/pacific-festival/

The 2nd Annual Pacific Festival reeled in an enormous crowd for 14 consecutive hours of live music this past Saturday at Oak Canyon Ranch. As 50+ bands scattered their performances amid the greenery, festival attendees were fed a musical feast of everything from the heavy, hard hitting mixes of Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki to the feet stomping jams of The Growlers and Black Lips. If you can arrange for Snoop Dog to spit unforgettable anthems only moments before Cut Copy graces the stage, we can only assume that this festival will be going head to head with bigger rivals (think Bamboozle, Coachella, Lollapalooza) in the years to come.

Congrats to the Collaborative Media guys on throwing an awesome music festival! The 2nd annual Pacific Festival: OC was some of the most fun we’ve had in quite some time and we are already getting excited for next year. Only 360 something more days until it’s here again!  The venue was unreal, the vibes were killer, and the music performances were nothing short of amazing. We were fortunate enough to be able to spend some time chatting with a few of the acts that performed at the festival, so keep a watchful eye out and check back frequently to see what we have in store over these next couple weeks.

OC Reloaded | Pacific Festival 2011 Over The Weekend
August 15, 2011
http://www.ocreloaded.com/concert-reviews/409-pacific-festival-2011-over-the-weekend.html

On the remote plains of the Irvine Lake, Pacific Festival 2011 took place. This relatively small festival was chalk full of underground superstars like !!! (Chk Chk Chk) Afroman, Steve Aoki, Phantogram, Bag Raiders, Toro Y Moi, Cut Copy and the not so underground Snoop Dogg.   The Pacific Festival crowd was unbelievably small for all the great acts performing, but they were a dedicated bunch staying at the festival close to 14 hours.  I even got to witness minute long hand stands by a shirtless man. The lake is what makes this venue a tranquil one among all the insanity. Not to mention the ample shade provided by the wonderfully large trees.  But if the desert scene is more your style there was small Dj platform set up for you in the far reaches of the venue. The dirt hills didn’t have a chance with Poolside spinning. The dirt created a huge cloud of dust that lifted about 6 feet into the air. The stomps and shuffling were contagious once your ear picked up the tribal drums and bass grooves your feet had no choice but to move.

Steve Aoki and Pacific Fest Entertainment hosted the 2nd annual Orange County Pacific Festival yesterday at Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado California. Artists such as Snoop Dogg, Calvin Harris, Ghostland Observatory, The Black Lips, Afroman and many more performed on one of the three stages yesterday at the festival. It was a day filled with music, dancing, good vibes and trendy outfits.  The VIP section had it goin’ on with their free beers, free vodka drinks and an endless amount of free water bottles. As much as we all wanted the free cocktails the free water bottles were what was really a necessity.  The sunshine quickly disappeared and as the nighttime crept around the corner the party grew and the crowd became wilder. From light shows to glow sticks the crowd had an amazing time at the later shows like Ghostland Observatory and Cut Copy. Thank you to everyone who helped out yesterday, Pacific Fest sold over 10K tickets.  We can all confidently say that Pac Fest 2011 was a huge success and a great time.

Red Bull | Pacific Festival OC: Snoop and Cut Copy Kill It
August 15, 2011

Cut Copy, Cosmic Kids, Steve Aoki, Bag Raiders, Zoot Woman, Black Lips — and Snoop Dogg? What sounds like an iPod playlist of a raver/hipster/hip-hop head schizophrenic, served as the diverse line-up for the second annual Pacific Festival. Held for the first time at the idyllic Oak Canyon Ranch at Lake Irvine in Orange County, California, the new sprawling venue allowed for food trucks, booze stations, a live art installation, a vendor row and a pond complete with scenic bridge, all lakeside with plenty of room to spare.  Despite the location carrying the suburbia-hell name of Irvine, Oak Canyon Ranch was tucked far enough away from civilization to go loud all night long without concerns of riling up any neighbors — a good thing when house, electro, indie and hip-hop music is blaring on five different public stages.

Digital Hippos | Pacific Festival: OC: 2011
August 15, 2011
http://digitalhippos.com/music/event-coverage/pacific-festival-oc-2011

In the depths of Irvine, CA along the edge of Irvine Lake sits Oak Canyon Ranch, home to this year’s Pacific Festival: OC, the 1-day, 15-hour long music festival featuring over 60 artists, 5 separate stages, and enough different sounds to liken the ears of every music fan. The festival, one of few music festivals in Orange County, attracted several thousand attendees from all parts of Orange County, gathering only for the second time in history, to celebrate music, art, food and culture in the OC. As the day wore on, crowds deepened, beer and bathroom lines grew longer and the music got better and better.  Costa Mesa based rock and pop group The Growlers got things going on the Main Stage early in the day, followed by Afroman, !!! (Chk, Chk, Chk) and festival founder Steve Aoki whose remix of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness,” turned the dial up a notch to get the crowd jumping and fist pumping right into Ghostland Observatory’s set, which provided some of the hottest electro rock beats of the day.  Phantogram and Toro y Moi attracted the largest crowds to the Pacific side stage, luring in festival-goers with their unique, up-beat and feel-good sound that seemed to catch and keep almost any passerby. DJs rotated throughout the day on the Lakeside, Shagadelika and Red Bull Stages creating a dance party anywhere you went.

OC Weekly | Pacific Festival: OC at Oak Canyon Ranch Last Saturday
August 15, 2011
http://blogs.ocweekly.com/heardmentality/2011/08/pacific_festivaloc_1.php

Across a wide expanse of gorgeous, lush tree-covered land, the creative minds behind Orange County’s Pacific Festival constructed five stages in the sweltering summer heat. Tanned teens and young adults, decked out in their American Apparel best, sweated out the Redbull ($3), beer ($8) and water ($2) they’d purchased in minutes, leaving them nothing to do but melt on the grass beneath the forest’s shade and contemplate spending more money on overpriced PBR. The pre-entry bag check had left all but the craftiest kids bone-dry–anything, even water, was confiscated.  It was this crowd–one that was tired and a tender pink from hours of sun, music and being just-barely tipsy–that Aussie Cut Copy performed for at 1 a.m., over an hour after their set was supposed to begin. Snoop Dogg’s tardiness (which he is notorious for) had pushed their set back. Turns out it didn’t matter much. When the lights flashed indicating that Cut Copy was about to take the stage, an uproar of applause began. The boys, energized despite the start time, lept around on stage in their sweat-soaked button-ups, occasionally gesturing to the crowd during particularly poignant points in the music. The jovial pop of “Take Me Over” embellished by frontman Dan Whitford’s near-nasal vocals and a Fleetwood Mac hook, pulsated with the crowd, encouraging them to dance off their lethargy.

Calvin Harris. His track selection, top-notch mixing, and persona really brought the crowd to their knees. Playing favorites like Bounce, You Used To Hold Me, I’m Not Alone, as well as some unreleased Dutch House bombs that I couldn’t recognize. I and many others, had a great time dancing to his beats.
Fred Falke – Another performer that showed up to the party was the groove-master Fred Falke. His dreamy Disco House set really had the crowd moving smoothly and swiftly at the Lakeside Stage (easily the best stage of the festival). You’d find yourself getting lost in his bubbly basslines and pounding kick-drums.  Cosmic Kids – Another fantastic set came from Cosmic Kids. Their track selection turned up the heat and gave the crowd exactly what they wanted, something to dance to!

Bag Raiders – And don’t even get me started on Bag Raiders. Not being the biggest fan of their material before the festival, I was thoroughly impressed by the extremely dance-oriented performance that continually fed irresistible rhythms to the avid crowd.

Water – Another thing Pacific Festival did right was the fact that water was cheap (as it should be at day long festivals) and was readily available for patrons to purchase. The entire locale in general was also a plus

Lakeside Stage – By far the coolest and most unique stage of the entire event, the Lakeside Stage created an incredibly groovy and sexy vibe that had partygoers dancing all night.

On Saturday, August 13, 2011 in Orange County, California, The Pacific Festival brought together some of the hardest partiers and most notable artists from the world of Dance and Electronic music.
!!! / Chk Chk Chk, one of the coolest, cultest, and danciest acts of the festival, took the stage with their own stylings of electronic Nu-Rave and Dance-Punk. Kicking both the tunes and bouncing beach-balls alike, Nic Offer and the !!!  crew stormed the stage with contagious beats and crowd favorites including, “Jamie, My Intentions are Bass” from their latest album Strange Weather, Isn’t It? There were also legendary moments from their back catalog too as Myth Takes, own “Must Be the Moon” entered new orbits and the volume of both band and audience increased to new highs for “Pardon My Freedom” from Louden Up Now.

Amazing festival, beautiful surroundings, wonderful crowd. This is what I remember the Sahara crowd was like a few years back. Everyone was dancing with just enough space to fill the stages, but not enough to be cramped or be forced into head-bobbing. The lakeside stage was my favorite place to be. That crowd was getting down the whole night. I did not see one fucking shuffler the entire 12 hours I was there. Bag Raiders were unbelievably good.

While New York bakes and London burns, Orange County in southern California welcomes the Pacific Festival on Saturday, August 13th.  While certainly leaning to the electro-dance (especially in the side Shagadelica, Lakeside, and Red Bull MXT stages), the Main and Pacific stages have lined up artists that stretch, from the party-garage of The Black Lips to all that is Snoop Dogg.  So stock up on sunscreen (but don’t bring the kids to this 18+ festival) and head down to Oak Canyon Ranch at Irvine Lake for the warm breeze of the Pacific:

Steve: Yeah Pacific Festival is the 13th of August on Saturday. I’ve been involved with that festival from day one. A really close friend of mine, one of my oldest friends… it was his brainchild. It’s a diverse lineup with Snoop Dogg, Ghostland Observatory, Cut Copy, then you have the DJ’s like Calvin [Harris] and myself. Then you have all the young guys coming up like Ali Love, Dan Sena, Mustard Pimp, and Autoerotique. It should be really good. And the area that it’s in is a really amazing outdoor venue for Orange County.

The Audio Perv | The Locals of Pacific Festival OC: A Preview
August 12, 2011
http://theaudioperv.com/2011/08/12/the-locals-of-pacific-festival-oc-a-preview/

While Orange County tends to be known for the pop punk, screamo, emo, and other mosh-inducing genres that thrive at renownedvenueslike Chain Reaction in Anaheim, the second annual Pacific Festival: OCis doing it’s best to battle the stereotypes. For the second year, the festival will be conjuring an “upscale” music event, featuring artists of all genres as well as a wide range of food anddrinks, art installations, and local business vendors. While last year the festival found a home in the small courtyard andvenues of the Triangle Square complex in Costa Mesa, this year the rising event will set up camp in Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine. It’s nestled in the Santa Ana Mountains where there are over one hundred acres that border the oldreservoirand are surrounded by hills, oak trees, a little pond, and a big lake. Sounds like a perfect spot for over 50 artists and 14hoursof music on 5 stages.

Headlining acts include the illustrious hip-hop mainstay and Long Beach resident Snoop Dog, Atlanta blues-tinged garage rock quartet BlackLips, internationally renowned Australian “indietronic” trio Cut Copy, and Newport-Beach-raised electro/house musician, producer, and label-founder Steve Aoki. Even just judging by those four, it’s easy to see the organizers have done a goodjob ofbalancing the genres on the bill. You will find a fair amount of DJs, house, and dance musicians, including France’s dance musician Alan Braxe, British electronic group Zoot Woman, and French house producer Fred Falke, but they’ve also pulled in some great indie acts likeT he Growlers, Phantogram, Superhumanoids, and Hanni El Khatib. …And then there’s Afroman, who will get his own category entirely.

OC Weekly |  Hanni El Khatib Is a Rock & Roll Schizo
August 11, 2011
http://www.ocweekly.com/2011-08-11/music/hanni-el-khatib-pacific-festival/

He’ll be playing this weekend at the second Pacific Festival, a colossally expanded version of the Steve Aoki-helmed festival that last year took over Triangle Square and Sutra in Costa Mesa. Then, Aoki booked a slew of DJs and live bands as diverse as Swedish new-wavers the Sounds and LA’s traditional-style reggae crew the Aggrolites, but he told OC Weekly he had originally wanted to take over Oak Canyon Ranch. This year, Aoki got his wish, with five stages and more than 50 bands capped by a Snoop Dogg greatest-hits set with a live band. With the rock & roll part including the Black Lips and the Growlers, El Khatib’s they-don’t-make-’em-like-this-anymore set fits in just fine—guitar, drums, and tales of love and woe.

Sounds from the West Coast and beyond will be showcased at the Pacific Festival in Orange County on Saturday. Dozens of acts will perform on 5 stages at the all-day affair at Oak Canyon Ranch.  The lineup of 50 or so acts features a healthy mix of (mostly danceable) indie bands and DJs, thanks in part to curation by festival partners Steve Aoki (Dim Mak) and Australia-based Modular Records.  Local faves include Superhumanoids, Classixx, The Growlers, Poolside, TRMRS and Cosmic Kids.  And there will be Snoop. And Afroman. Yes, that Afroman.  Other highlights include Ghostland Observatory, Phantogram, Toro y Moi, Zoot Woman, Black Lips, !!! and Steve Aoki vs. Calvin Harris at dusk. Modular Records mixmasters Bang Gang Deejays, dance duo Bag Raiders and Cut Copy represent the other side of the Pacific.  The festival grounds see a nice upgrade after last year’s inaugural event at The Triangle in Costa Mesa. Oak Canyon Ranch is sprawling and scenic, located a good five-to-ten minutes from civilization where Silverado Canyon spills into Irvine Lake (map).  Leave the kids at home — Pacific Festival is an 18+ event. Check out the lineup matrix below for set times. Tickets are still available online, at the Dim Mak office in Hollywood, or at the box office on site after 10 a.m. Saturday.

Electro Dance Media | Bounce to Calvin Harris at Pacific Festival
August 2, 2011
http://electrodancemedia.com/event-preview/bounce-to-calvin-harris-at-pacific-festival

This past year has been a crazy one for modern day renascence man Calvin Harris. First starting his carrier as a singer-songwriter with his first two albums I Created Disco and the #1 U.K. debut Ready for the Weekend, its only been recently that Calvin has moved into DJing more so than performing live. His music has also seen a significant change in pace and is more electro based instead of disco oriented. some of the new tracks hes made in the past year include the bouncing electro banger “Awooga” and the recently released and super catchy “Bounce” featuring Kelis.  Harris has made appearances at festivals like Beyond Wonderland, Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas as well as having residencies at Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas and Cream at Amnesia in Ibiza. Next up, Calvin will be performing at the Pacific Festival along with artist like Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, Zeds Dead, Afroman, Them Jeans, Bird Peterson, Mr. White, Mustard Pimps and many more. The festival will be held in Orange County at the Oak Canyon Ranch, which features huge grassy areas as well as the picturesque Lake Irvine as the backdrop. Oak Canyon Ranch has quickly become one of the newest homes for dance music festivals, since Los Angeles became afraid of dancing and having fun after EDC 2010.  Calvin’s next single, “Feel So Close,” is due out on August 21st and his full length artist album will be released in early 2012.  For more information about Pacific Festival, visit http://pacificfestival.com/

Summer music festival season- it’s a beautiful thing. What are you currently up to as far as touring, recording, projects and good ol’ living this summer?

Cameron: This summer we are playing a couple shows, including Pacific Festival, but we’re mainly focusing on writing and recording an album. We’re trying out some new things for our live set in terms of instrumentation and set up as well, which we have in place for the festival itself. BBQs and swimming in the meantime
Tell us who you are most excited to be playing alongside/to see at this year’s Pacific Festival festival?

Cameron: I’m a big Cut/Copy fan, so it is really exciting to be playing with them – I’ve seen them a couple times and it always is great. Excited to see Phantogram and Toro Y Moi as well. It will be great to see some of our LA-friends from Classixx, Cosmic Kids, Steffi Graf, Scorpion Breath, and Sweat Pants – kinda like a field trip south.

Toyota Antics | Q&A: The Twelves Enjoying A Summer Chat
July 15, 2011
http://www.uptheantics.com/blog/entry/qa_the_twelves_enjoying_a_summer_chat

Today, we bring to you some useful notes and solid updates from Rio de Janeiro’s own DJ duo, The Twelves. Comprised of João Miguel and Luciano Oliveira, the breakthrough for The Twelves came in July of 2007 when they remixed the track “Boyz” from M.I.A’s sophomore album, Kala. These guys sat with us to talk Pacific Festival: OC, Toro y Moi, and Vodka Red Bull for breakfast. Take the jump, and read up on our into with The Twelves.

Tell us who you are most excited to be playing alongside/to see at this year’s Pacific Festival festival?

L: We’ve both been listening to quite a lot of Toro y Moi’s latest, really looking forward to hearing how it translates to a good stage.
J: Toro Y Moi, definitely. I’ve been listening to his latest incredible album “Underneath the Pine” on a daily basis. I saw some of their live performances on YouTube and even with that shitty audio quality sounded amazing! Can’t wait! I’m also looking to hear Zoot Woman. They have always been an inspiration to us before The Twelves started. We just saw Cut Copy playing on Coachella and everyone went nuts! Also a show not to be missed.

Good news is that The Pacific Festival brings together a mixture of genres, spanning from dance and indie rock, to hip hop and house, so you can get your groove on no matter who’s taking the stage. Not like that’ll be much of an issue, either, with headliner Snoop Dogg bringing the heat along with additional big names added on the daily.

A music festival doesn’t have to involve grunge-filled living conditions. The Pacific Festival is distinct as it has been designed as an upscale music event with the finest amenities and production for guests to benefit from.

In their second year, the Pacific Festival: OC has arranged a massive line-up headlined by Orange County-native Snoop Dogg and featuring a ‘who’s who’ of hype-worthy artists such as Cut Copy, Toro y Moi, Jacques Renault, Classixx, and more. In true LA/OC fashion, the festival presents itself with an air of faux-celebrity as displayed in the official trailer by the Cobra Snake. We’ve been longing to make it to one of Steve Aoki and Collaborative Media’s events for some time now (or since we started getting their emails a few years ago). So, we feel pretty lucky that our opportunity to make it the West Coast will coincide with this year’s Pacific Festival: OC. Moreover, with a lineup thats loaded with talent, we’re looking forward to enjoying some of the best music in the indie and electronic scenes. Below are a few of the artists that we’re eager to check out along with the full line-up.

So lately it seems that when it comes to art and culture, the people of Orange County seem ashamed. They believe that our humble stomping grounds are a bit lacking, and that it’s nightlife doesn’t satisfy. Every weekend, and now that summer is here, every weekday everyone seems to flock to Los Angeles in search of something bigger and better. Well thanks to Steve Aoki and his crew, the Pacific Festival was born and I believe this is a direct response to the lack of pride residents of Orange County have in it.

The Pacific Festival is an arts and music festival in Orange County put on by locals for locals. Only the BEST will be playing, from founding father Steve Aoki, to the king of the West Coast King Snoop Dogg, all the way to the Bag Raiders from down under. We plan to cover this event, and post periodic updates before and during the event so stay tuned! For more information check out Mark Hunter and Steve Aoki’s infomercial here or check out the website here.

Seriously? Snoop Dogg at Pacific Festival: OC? What an announcement! I swear that news about this event is coming in at such a torrential rate that we absolutely can’t keep up. With a lineup as stacked as it is already in the worlds of indie and electronica, this came as a pretty big surprise.

The rumor is that Ghostland Observatory and Snoop might have a collaboration in the works.

Asides from the Christian-youth concerts, it’s rare that a decent music festival pops up in the county-wide burbs that is the OC (is he kidding?). Well the Pacific Festival is coming down to these privileged masses Saturday, August 13th, with a barrage of better-known independent artists, delivering a well-needed dose of independent electro, dubstep, and rock to the suburban populace.  If you don’t think you can convince your friends that this slightly alternative music festival is gonna be fun, just tellem’ Snoop Dogg will be there.  Yep, recently announced for the show is our consistently adored rap artist from our childhood, who happens to have only lived juuuust northwest of where this festival will be taking place.  If you feel like your dad’s cover band isn’t cutting it for you on Saturday, August 13th, feel free to drop by Oak Canyon Ranch to check it out.

Raw Goodage | Pacific Festival OC 2011
June 15, 2011
http://www.rawgoodage.com/2011/06/pacific-festival-oc-2011-2.html

Last year, the Pacific Festival was a pleasantly surprising curveball for Orange County. I thought to myself, “a massive festival coming to our peaceful streets with Steve Aoki as a headliner? This isn’t something you see here everyday.” The difference this year is that the event is being held at the Oak Canyon Ranch, recent home for shows like Lightning In A Bottle and 420 Fest. It is much bigger when compared to Costa Mesa’s Triangle Square, allowing a more comfortable and safe experience for all attendees. For 2011, Dim Mak and Collaborative Media are bringing us an even bigger lineup, which is still growing. The event will feature 4 stages, food, art, and music from over 35 DJs and bands. Grab some free tracks and find out more information about the event,

Yowza, what a line-up. This year marks the second annual Pacific Festival, founded in part by Steve Aoki. If last year at Electric Zoo taught me anything, it’s that the second year of a festival is the time to make your move, the event will have grown in significance without becoming overrun. This video recap of last year, looks hella fun, and I’m not about to miss out this time. Grab your tickets here.

The 2011 Pacific Festival will go down on Saturday, August 13th at Oak Canyon Ranch located in  Orange County, CA. I can’t imagine a more relaxing setting to enjoy a rather strong lineup, including Cut Copy, Calvin Harris, and Toro Y Moi, among others. The organizers sought to create something quintessentially southern Californian, sentiments echoed by Steve Aoki, one of the festival’s founding partners, who endeavored to, “establish a premium music and arts festival, and have organized a large collective of seasoned event producers, artists, friends and musicians”. As seemingly every summer festival corners you into making a three-day commitment, The 2011 Pacific Festival promises to be a single, cathartic day of excellent summer-time music… We loved the new Toro Y Moi LP, and we will surely be looking forward to hearing songs from the somewhat out of character Underneath The Pine at this year’s Pacific Festival, so check out “New Beat” off Underneath The Pine, and nab your tickets to the 2011 Pacific Festival below!

Yet another great lineup announcement for this event! There’s been a LOT of excitement surrounding Orange County’s upcoming Pacific Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, August 13th, the festival will consist of 30 acts, four sound stages, and what appears to be an eclectic, but star-studded lineup.  The website and promo materials are clean and simple, depicting blue skies and a calm ocean surface. An allusion no doubt to our chill SoCal vibe and what I would assume the festival will bring to the EDM event scene in our region. The most recent big-name additions have been Calvin Harris, Cut Copy as headliner, Ghostland Observatory, and now, Bag Raiders!  For me, the original lineup with French House producer Fred Falke was enough to make me smile.

Filter Magazine | Filter Five: Top 5 Most Anticipated Summer Festivals in North America
May 6, 2011
http://filtermagazine.com/index.php/news/entry/filter_five_our_top_5_most_anticipated_summer_festivals

Summertime is just around the corner and there are a lot of things people look forward to: warm weather, the beach, no school, girls in sundresses, BBQs and, best of all, the slew of summer festivals around North America to road trip out towards with friends and good tunes by your side. So we asked around: Which ones are the FILTER offices looking forward to most this summer? A few self-moderated guidelines as we tallied the results:  1. The locale must fall within the borderlines of North America and 2. The fest must occur before the end of August (this automatically disqualified FILTER Magazine’s Culture Collide in October, but obviously we think everyone should go to that anyways).  Five’s a limiting number, and there are plenty more. What Can-Am-Mex summertime music festivals are you looking forward to most?

Things To Do Inland Empire | Pacific Festival: OC 2011
May 6, 2011
http://www.thingstodoinlandempire.com/pacific-festival-oc-2011/

Orange County will soon be the home base for fast beats and dance music this August when electronic house music DJ Steve Aoki and others perform at Pacific Festival: OC in Irvine.  In its second year, Pacific Festival: OC is an all-day event featuring art, food and music from Orange County and around the world. More in line for Southern California’s younger music-loving population, the festival serves as a showcase of the best that independent music has to offer with 30 live acts playing various genres – not just dance – between four sound areas.  A portion of the event’s proceeds will go toward supporting theSurfrider Foundation.  Aside from famed house music DJ and Newport Beach native Steve Aoki, the event’s headlining act is Melbourne-based synthpop band Cut Copy, commonly known for their “electropop” blend of music that combines 80s new wave and post-punk. Fresh off their show at the Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival in April, the group will be playing this show in Orange County just months after their Inland Empire appearance.  Additions to the lineup include Scottish DJ and dance/pop music producer Calvin Harris, whose album “Ready for the Weekend” topped UK charts in summer 2009, and rapperAfroman, who gained notoriety with his 2000 hit “Because I Got High,” a comedic song about the effects of smoking too much marijuana.  But the driving force behind Pacific Festival: OC is none other than Steve Aoki, the electrohouse DJ known for his legions ofdevoted fans and his ability to attract large crowds at his energetic shows.  With his star rising and his technology-driven musical know-how producing increasingly popular hits like “Warp,” the picturesque grounds of Oak Canyon Ranch at Irvine Lake will be the place to be on Saturday, August 13 at 11am when Pacific Festival: OC hits Southern California. Just make sure to get your tickets before they’re sold out.

Britscene.com | Calvin Harris Added To Pacific Festival Line-Up
May 5, 2011
http://www.britscene.com/2011/05/calvin-harris-added-pacific-festival/
British singer, songwriter, DJ and producer Calvin Harris has been added to the Pacific Festival:OC line-up. Taking place on August 13th at Oak Canyon Ranch, Irvine Lake, CA., the festival is only in it’s second year but has pulled in the likes of Cut Copy, Afroman and now Calvin Harris. The single day event runs from 10:00am to 12:00pm and costs $95 for general admission ticket. Calvin Harris first burst onto the British music scene after his music was discovered on social networking site Myspace. His first major release was his 80′s inspired hit Acceptable in the 80s back in 2007 which achieved UK top ten chart success. Since then Harris has gone on to produce the likes of Kylie Minogue, work with Katy Perry and remix and a load of artists including The Ting Tings, Primal Scream and Kelis. He even had an offer to work with Lady Gaga but turned it down!  His first album I Created Disco was followed in 2009 when Harris released his second record Ready for the Weekend and the Brit is expected to drop his third this year. Check out the highlight real from last years Pacific Festival and a few tracks from Calvin Harris. The first being Acceptable in the 80′s and his more recent dance inspired track I’m Not Alone.  For more information about the Pacific Festival visit the official website pacificfestival.com.

Hands down, one of my favorite performers live is the Australian dance indie pop band Cut Copy. Their catchy tunes make for great sing-alongs in the car, but seeing and feeling the band’s energy and enthusiasm in person is a whole other ordeal. They get into the music as much as everyone else, and you can’t help but leave their show with a smile on your face, and feet tired from all the dancing you did.  Cut Copy just played an enigmatic set at Coachella, but their return to Southern California is already booked. They’ll be headlining Pacific Festival OC, taking place in August in Irvine. Sure, you’ll have to drive down the coast to Orange County, but with Toro Y Moi, !!!, Classixx, the Growlers and Superhumanoids also on the line-up, it’ll be worth the long trip. And if you purchase tickets now, you’ll be paying nearly half the regular price — $50 instead of $95. But these tickets are super limited, so get on it, and get ready to soon dance with some fun Aussies.  Pacific Festival OC is taking place on August 13 at Oak Canyon Ranch, located at 5305 E Santiago Canyon in Irvine. Le New Shit | Pacific Festival: OC Review
September 9, 2010
http://lenewshit.wordpress.com/2010/09/09/oc-pacific-festival-pictures-coming-soon/

The OC Pacific Festival went off without a hitch in the heart of Costa Mesa at Triangle Square, ALL PICTURES ARE UP!  We had a chance to check out Pacific Festival in Costa Mesa over Labor Day weekend and the lineup consisted of Miami Horror, Steve Aoki, The Sounds, Classixx, Them Jeans, Casette, Dan Sena, Chiddy Bang Bang, Rob Roy and much  more. The musical acts, the food and drinks, and kick-ass Southern California weather made for a formidable experience. Even the infamous Jesse James and Kat Von D made their relationship official by appearing publicly together at the festival! It was nice to see a diverse mix of people gathered for the sole purpose of amazing music and drinking. Besides awesome music, everyone had access to a wide variety of good eats and beverages at the event.

Miami Horror made their U.S. debut and I was blown away by their sound, especially live. Right when they took the stage, they showed enthusiasm and their fun stage presence translated into audience excitement. They got the audience roaring and dancing, even when The Sounds were the headliners. For their first performance in the states, it was incredible and I would not be surprised if they headlined an event in the near future.  Unlike, Miami Horror, this was The Sound‘s last live performance in the states before they head back to Sweden to work on their upcoming fourth album. Usually by the last stop, most artists tend to be burnt out from touring but The Sounds were not. Their energy and passion on stage surely made a lasting impression on every attendee there and they definitely delivered. Looking forward to the next album! Finally to the main event: Steve Aoki. Stage diving, spraying champagne into the crowd, jumping around stage, screaming into the mic, Chiddy bang, insane stage lighting, and paper confetti blasting into the audience? Yeah, just another Steve Aoki show.  The event was nowhere close to over when Aoki’s set ended, it was just the start of the evening. After Aoki’s build up, a lot more artists performed throughout the night and our friend Dan Sena dropped his newest track which got the crowd in a total rage.  All in all, it was a great event and something new. Orange County is already limited to music concerts andto have a festival (which hosts like 50+ artists) is something unheard of here! The crowd was great, heard some new bands, drank lots, and partied hard. Will we be seeing any more festivals in the near future? I hope so.

People.com | Kat Von D Kisses Jesse James Goodbye …
September 6, 2010
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20419160,00.html

“ It’s back to the real world for Jesse James and Kat Von D. After spending Labor Day weekend joined at the hip, the couple shared a goodbye kiss when Von D dropped James at LAX Monday. With their love apparently in full bloom, the pair packed the weekend with music, food and PDA. On Friday, James and Von D ate lunch a deux and were later spotted filling up at a local gas station. The next day, the lovebirds soaked up the sun in Orange County, Calif., and were seen kissing and holding hands after hitting two music events – the Sutra5 and the Pacific Festival. RELATED: Kat Von D: I’m in Love with Jesse James Saturday was casual, with lunch at Pinches Tacos before they headed back to the O.C. James was presumably at the airport to fly back to Austin. He and his children moved to Texas so the kids could maintain the close relationship they’ve developed with their stepmother, Sandra Bullock) “and manage Austin Speed Shop, his custom car outfit.” Since his move, James has also squired Von D around his new Texas turf.”

The Live OC | Orange County’s Pacific Festival Goes Off Without a Hitch
September 6, 2010
http://theliveoc.com/concert-reviews/218-oc-pacificfestival-review.html

Every music festival is just a metaphor waiting to happen. And whether you want to compare it to a cornucopia, a mafia, or some kind of cult, one thing is clear: it’s impossible to narrow a festival down to just one thing. While a concert is simply about live music, a festival is a microcosm of shows, stages, food, drink, and yes, Porta-Potties. For those Orange County festival fiends that didn’t feel like trekking up to LA for FYF Festival but still wanted the festival experience this weekend, there was the Pacific Festival at the Triangle Square in Costa Mesa, a joint event with Sutra5.  The Triangle Square was decked out in blue astro turf and gauzy white fabric overhead, providing much appreciated shade for the audience at the Pacific Outdoor Stage, the main performance space at the event. Grouped around this space were bathrooms, a VIP bar, merch tables, food stands, and lounge areas. It was a comfortable set up, but this venue with two shapes for a name was not without issues. The festivities also took place in the nearby Sutra Lounge, making the most of the partnership with Sutra5. The Triangle Square is set up in a strip mall’s central plaza, and this mall-ish aspect created the need for a huge security staff that seemed to hover ominously over the audience. But this did not deter festivalgoers from drinking their fair share of light beer and weak cocktails.

It was quite a mix of people too: surf hipsters with sun-bleached mop tops, entry-level punks sweating in their black attire, heavily Botoxed moms, young ladies in shorts too tiny to be believed, and a few people who took Neon Indian as a literal influence on their attire, flaunting headdresses and tee shirts that hurt my eyes. It was almost heartwarming to see such a diverse mix of people gathered together for the same purpose of live music and day drinking. The vibe on day one was an underground frenzy at the Pacific Outdoor Stage. I arrived in the middle of the Classixx set and their songs provided a soundtrack to the building energy in the audience.

Classixx sounds the way Daft Punk would if they had had Garageband and Apple Loops at their disposal. It’s lots of arpeggios, quiet basslines, and familiar samples like Phoenix (we got a little taste of “So Sentimental” in their set), Major Lazer, and Shiny Toy Guns. When “I’ll Get You,” came on, the crowd was thrilled and gathered around the stage to dance and toss an inflatable Love Sheep in the air. This song experienced some viral Internet love a few months ago with their video featuring an American Apparel’d brunette babe frolicking at the seashore, so it felt like a great choice for the Costa Mesa crowd.

Almost immediately after Classixx had finished their set, Miami Horror took the stage and even more people gathered around just to get close to these handsome Aussie rockers. Since they didn’t spend time with a sound check, the mix was a little funky on the first song with the vocals overpowering all the other sound, but by their next song, everything was worked out and I was blown away by the playful 80’s vibe and musicianship of these guys. Their songs are always some incarnation of guitar, drums, bass, and a pair of keyboards, but who’s playing what is totally up in the air. They kept trading instruments like some musical do-si-do, but it was the singer’s vibrancy and the versatility of their set that captivated the audience and I. His enthusiasm and stage presence translated into audience excitement and by the time they brought out the cowbells, I was totally smitten. After all, there’s no such thing as too much cowbell. The drummer kept everything right in the pocket musically, and the singer got the audience to roar as he scaled the scaffolding on the right side of the stage. The smell of beer and cigarettes was concentrating around me, but it wasn’t altered states of consciousness that had everyone hooked on these cute, emaciated-looking rock hipsters from half a world away. Their sound was the perfect mix of all the musical stylings that we got in day one of Pacific Festival: sparkly, fun electro pop and all the raw excitement of a good electric guitar solo. Even though The Sounds were supposed to be a bigger attraction, they had a lot to live up to after Miami Horror’s set.

Maja Ivarsson, the Blondie/Katy Perry lovechild lead singer of The Sounds, managed to be both tough and very polite towards her fans. I’ve never been called a “motherfucker” so many times as I was during The Sounds’ performance, but she also thanked us frequently for coming out to see their show. The overall effect ended up being pretty charming and you can tell that she has mastered the art of stage presence during her long career. Her eensy weensy black hot pants probably didn’t hurt the crowd’s approval, either. The sun was setting throughout their set and pretty soon it was time to turn up the stage lights, and The Sounds’ natural habitat definitely involves flashing lights and screaming crowds. Their energy picked up once the setting felt more like a nighttime show and the audience fed off of their passion.

Something about their performance was like Peter Pan on crack – the impish Tinkerbell lead singer with her backup band of lost boys, screaming at the audience about the dissatisfaction of youth like they’re never gonna grow up. By the end of the set, we found out that this was their last show in the US before returning to Sweden to cut their fourth album. This explained why Ivarsson seemed so intent on getting as much audience interaction as possible, chit chatting, screaming, and throwing the mic at them over and over in one of the most epic bits of showmanship that I’ve ever seen. In one of their last songs (which I think was used in a Geico caveman commercial but I’m not sure), the drummer busted out a solo that made my eyeballs pop out of my head it was so good – I wished that we’d seen more of him earlier on. After their last song, the crowd was tingling in the afterglow, demanding one more song. The Sounds obliged but only asking us “How bad do you want it?” and flicking Ivarsson’s cigarette into the adoring crowd. Overall, they delivered a great set and definitely made the most of their last live show before bringing us more grimy yet glittery pop rock goodness with their upcoming album.

After The Sounds, the audience was visibly woozy from a day of mimosas, beer, and Grey Goose with Red Bull. We were getting to the home stretch of day one at Pacific Festival, and it was time to guzzle some Vitamin Water and prepare for the main event: Steve Aoki. People were shoving pulled pork sandwiches into their faces, hoarding around the public toilets, and stumbling into security guards like it was going out of style. I’m pretty sure that one especially boozy couple standing next to me broke up during this calm before the Aoki storm. He came onstage with a hefty entourage, took the DJ booth, and right away there was earsplitting feedback coming through the speakers. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t freaked out. Would he live up to the hype? Would my fellow festivalgoers pass out before his set even began? Did someone just stroke my hair? But only a moment later, an incredible vibration shook the Triangle Square to its core. Did all of our iPhones just start vibrating at the same time? No, Steve Aoki was ready to dazzle us.

The great thing about Aoki’s music is the distinction and depth of his mixes. Everything he does feels so complex and premeditated when you hear his recordings, it’s hard to imagine how it could get much better, even if he is standing right in front of you, iconic moustache and all. But when his music came through the speakers at enormous volumes, the entire audience was overcome. We huddled around the stage as close as we could get, he held his arms up in the air and raised his face to the sky, delicately pulsing his movements to the beat that was putting the rest of us in a trance. The best thing about this show was already frightfully apparent: the contrast between Aoki’s mellow demeanor and the controlled chaos of his beats. He shuffled around the stage like a grandpa in slippers, so serene and cavalier, only breaking from this attitude to toss someone into a crowd surf, scream maniacally into the mic, or spray champagne onto his fans. At one especially intense moment, giant pieces of paper confetti shot out and rained down on the audience. It was total live show bliss.

Like his “I’m In The House,” hit album, his set kept looping back to those familiar beats and samples, No chord or sound of Aoki’s could be called simple; he uses lots of octaves to add intense harmonic depth, and is never afraid to suddenly warp his synths for a perfect transition into his next track. We got previews for an upcoming work with Travis Barker, which was an eerie mix of diminished chords and clock sounds. If I have any complaints, it’s that his set was over too quickly. He kept looping back to this “Up, up up!” line, building a wall of sound over and over again, and when his set ended, the event itself didn’t deliver from Aoki’s build up.

The bars were open, sure, but the festival was slated to continue until 2 am and we’d already hit the climax. There were other DJs to come, including DJ DC who was woozily trying to break the world record for consecutive hours DJing, but it didn’t seem worth staying for when I had day two to look forward to.
The second day of the Pacific Festival was perfectly suited to all the hangovers from day one. I arrived right before the Aggrolites and basked in the beach party vibe. Everyone was casual, the music was mellow, and even the heat from the day before had cooled off into a perfect, breezy Costa Mesa day. All I was missing was a drink with an umbrella in it.

I felt this lack of an umbrella beverage even more as soon as the Aggrolites started playing. I mean, here was a group of guys that looked like dads in matching black button ups and sunglasses. They sort of looked like they were getting ready to go to a bowling tournament until they started sipping their Newcastles and chatting with the crowd. Coming off of a full day of electro kickassery, I was kind of blindsided by this reggae group and I think the crowd was too, but they got into it eventually. Then again, to call the Aggrolites “reggae,” is an extreme injustice because what they’re doing is much more. It’s like Little Richard and Jimmy Buffett listening to rockabilly on a beach while drinking cold Jager. It’s awesome, but more than that, it’s fun and it feels good to listen and dance to. Their keyboard was housed in a rolling trunk and it sounded funky and whimsical, almost circusy. They had a great festival spirit and got the crowd all geared up for the Expendables, but they weren’t too out of control about it – their attitudes and their music were just right for the occasion.

During the lull between the Aggrolites and the Expendables, I decided to venture from the main stage and the MC (who reminded me too much of the blonde guy from Insane Clown Posse) and made my way to the White Room stage to catch a bit of Pacific Dub’s set. This band is a couple local boys and they’ve put together an agreeable reggae-ish combo. I didn’t expect such awesome musicianship from guys who look like high schoolers, but each of their songs was remarkably different and, even more remarkably, extremely fun to listen to and watch. The guitarist/lead singer had the best voice that I heard all day and the band as a whole was bringing in a ton of different influences to make a really unique sound. They were casual with the audience and each other, but people were migrating to go see The Expendables by the end of their set, so I felt bummed for them. I’m not too concerned though, I expect great things from these guys in the very near future.

The Expendables are a self-proclaimed blend of reggae, punk, and 80’s. When I read this on my iPhone I was understandably a little skeptical. The answer ended up being pretty easy: Sublime. The Expendables seem to have picked up in 1997 where Sublime left off in 1996, and Costa Mesa couldn’t have loved it any more. Their music, for better or worse, put me right back in Junior High when my friends and I were just discovering this type of music, and this was the first time I’d seen anything like it live and I was not disappointed. Their stage presence was exceptional, but even more outstanding was the music itself.  Their guitar solos were absolutely impeccable and their command of the pedals at their feet was way impressive. They played “old school” songs, drank Jager from a plastic Kirkland water bottle, and turned the reverb up to eleven. Their last song “Sacrifice,” highlighted both their showmanship and musical abilities and definitely appeased all of their fans.

Finally, it was Rebelution time. The crowd was ready. I was ready. And after a little soundcheck, Rebelution had the crowd by the ear. Everyone had their arms up in the air, bouncing along to their powerful basslines. It’s hard to describe Rebelution’s sound. Their lead singer’s voice is so crisp and clear that he almost sounds auto-tuned, and they’re a little more hardcore than your regular reggae group, as evidenced by the “metal” song that the crowd was more than happy to cheer for. Their drum set was absolutely incredible – the drummer was practically engulfed by the variety of cymbals all around him. I might be wrong here, but I thought that the lead singer also had a bunch of pedals hooked up to his vocal mic and that he was adding different effects on different choruses and bridges. This demonstrates a really admirable awareness of equipment as well as his own voice and music and I was mighty impressed. Smoke was rising into the air, people were dancing and spinning, the lights were flashing and the keyboard was raging: it was like an electric parade in Jamaica and I was loving every minute of it. They casually asked the audience how they were doing between songs, the answer was always a wild cheer. The set was over all too soon and the festival seemed to dissipate like the pungent clouds of smoke from the start of Rebelution’s set. It was slightly anticlimactic, but it had been a good, long day.

That’s another difference between concerts and festivals. Leaving a concert, it’s always on a high note. After the indubitable encore, the crowd pours out of a stadium, totally abuzz with the set list, the equipment, the stage setup, and all the events of the night. But at a festival, you’re dead tired and your favorite act wasn’t necessarily the last one you saw. It’s a price you pay, but the benefits are great, and that’s what I experienced at Pacific Festival. I got to see a ton of awesome acts, I was exposed to cool, new groups, and I got to spend two days rubbing elbows with people who just wanted to have fun and enjoy great live music. While people were sweating, complaining, and waiting in lines at FYFest, those of us OC residents who opted for the Pacific Festival got two comfortable days of music, food, and all the fun of a good music festival right in our own backyard.

OC Weekly | Steve Aoki Talks About Pacific Festival: OC and How Growing Up in Conservative OC Turned Him into a Hipster Icon
September 2, 2010
http://blogs.ocweekly.com/heardmentality/interview/steve-aoki-talks-about-pacific/

Steve Aoki grew up in Newport Beach in the ’80s and ’90s, and he says growing up in a very conservative, white part of Orange County definitely “turned me into the person that I am.” Aoki took solace in Orange County’s hardcore punk scene and immersed himself in music.  Fifteen years after moving away from Orange County, Aoki is a world-renowned DJ, heads the DimMaklabel, books various dance music festivals around the country and introduces cutting-edge music to locals by way of the Pacific Festival: OC, happening this weekend in Costa Mesa.  (Note to self: raise kids in Newport Beach to raise successful hipster icons.)  Aoki explains that Pacific Festival: OC got started because there’s not much going on by way of festival life. “It’s five minutes from my mom’s house, where I grew up,” he said.

Saturday is a showcase for upcoming bands and DJs, including Aoki ,  The Sounds, Miami Horror,  Chiddy Bang, while Sunday’s lineup caters more to Orange County with reggae acts such as Rebelution and other local bands. Aoki and co. aim to bring the festival to the doors of OC residents by ushering it into Triangle Square. “I don’t know if something like this could’ve happened even a year ago,” he said, “we’re introducing a lot of [up-and-coming] sound to Orange County people who are finally accepting of something like this.”  Ironically, the group originally wanted to hold the festival at Oak Canyon Ranch by Irvine Lake, butbecause of the Electric Daisy Carnival fiasco, there were complications getting permits. “Orange County itself is really conservative, so I wasn’t surprised,” Aoki said. Aoki gives props to Mike Tunney, who “lives and breathes Orange County. [The festival] really his brainchild.”

Aoki’s Picks:
1. Chiddy Bang “They’re definitely on the rise–Chiddyis an amazing rapper, quick witted and funny. Thatgroup is really special.”
2. Miami Horror “It’s their first American live show.”
3. Rob Roy. “He’s  somewhere between Andre 3000 and D’angelo.”
4. DJ DC from Austria: A contender for the Guinness Book of World Record’s longest DJ set–”He is deejaying as we speak!”

Among the many talented DJ’s to be featured at Pacific Festival’s debut event, Kedd Cook aka Ian Alexander, stands out among the rest of the locals looking to make a name for themselves. With one of the most hectic weekly event schedules (tues/wed/thurs/fri) that i have ever heard of, Alexander is clearly one of the hardest working kids in town, and after playing with him recently at Boys & Girls, it was easy to see why he was in such high demand… If Zack Morris in the 80′s spent as much time trying digging through tracks and practicing on serato as much as he did trying to bang Kelly Kapowski.. well.. then you would have a decent Kedd Cook knockoff.. who still wouldn’t be sharing the stage with the likes of Classixx, Miami Horror, Lifelike, The Sounds, Human Life ,Etc. at Pacific Festival this Saturday the 2nd.
Check out this exclusive mixtape he put together for the event, and join me this Saturday in the fine Orange County air to enjoy the sensual sounds of.. Kedd Cook.

It’s always been a dream of ours to see an electronic music festival come to Los Angeles that catered more towards the music we cover here. As a counterpoint to the HARD festivals that are basically an extension of the Hollywood electro scene that has dominated LA for five years, we thought something a little more eclectic could be amazing.  Finally, along comes Pacific Festival. Put together by Mike Tunney and his company Collaborative Media, Pacific Festival is the start of the realization of those dreams. We’ll be seeing 2 performances that we’ve been aching for for a long time (Miami Horror LIVE, and the living legend Lifelike), and a host of other DJs and performers (Classixx, Alan Braxe, Human Life, and The Sounds) that are getting their first chances at a SoCal festival. So, Los Angeles, stand up on Saturday and make the drive down to Orange County. Saturday its going down in Costa Mesa and everyone would be silly not to try and make it.  You can head over here to buy tickets, and hopefully we’ll all see you out at the Pacific Festival this weekend!  Our friends in Human Life are playing the show on Saturday, and so as a nice lil bonus, here’s their very Binary B side, Italo Crimewave.

Golden Bloggen | PACIFIC FESTIVAL: OC THIS WEEKEND
August 31, 2010
http://goldenbloggen.wordpress.com/2010/08/31/pacific-festival-oc-this-weekend/

The other week I covered the 30th Annual Sunset Junction. This weekend marks the firstPacific Festival in Costa Mesa. The festival has a good mix of genres, not covering just dance music or just indie rock like so many new festivals. The festival will include performances by Steve Aoki, The Sounds, LA beasts Classixx, the super hot CC Sheffield, and my boy and Cinespace resident Them Jeans. But I think the most interesting thing in the Line-up may be the first live U.S. performance from Miami Horror. I’ve been a fan of Miami Horror’s New Wave inspired electro for a few years, and even got to see them DJ a couple years ago, but this will be the first time they perform Live in America. That’s gotta turn some heads. So all you OC dance fans and indie kids, get ready for the Pacific Festival!

LA Beat Connection | Festivals Ahoy
August 31, 2010
http://labeatconnection.com/2010/08/festivals-ahoy/

“The Orange County Pacific Festival is a 2 day event taking place this weekend inside and outside Triangle Square and Sutra in Costa Mesa. Sunday is more of a ska/reggae deal with bands like the Aggrolites and Rebelution, but Saturday is all about the disco. Indie dance darlings The Sounds and Miami Horror are among the headlining groups, as are DJs like Dim Mak boss Steve Aoki, “Music Sounds Better With You” co-creator Alan Braxe, local favorites Classixx, and Brooklyn disco duo Runaway. Tickets are 40 bones and can be bought here. If you go, be sure not to miss Alan Braxe, Runaway or Lifelike. The festival is actually just a part of the 5 day “Sutra 5” event, which starts tomorrow at the club of the same name in Costa Mesa and coincides with DJ DC’s attempt to break the world record for longest DJ set. Trance superstars Above & Beyond will be there tomorrow, tech house phenom Joris Voorn will play Thursday, and hip hop/electro crossover Mickey Avalon will take the stage on Friday. The OC be poppin.  Saturday’s FYF (Fuck Yeah Festival) boasts more of an eclectic array of talents, but, like the Pacific Festival, is geared mostly toward the indie dance/nu disco crowd. Live sets from dynamic dance acts The Rapture and !!! make this a festival worth checking out, as do performances from disco/chillwave act Delorean and acid rockers Wavves. It all goes down this Saturday at LA’s Historic State Park, the same venue at which HARD’s Summer Festival took place. Tickets are highly affordable -only 30 clams- and can be bought here. The hipsters will be out in force for this once.  Lastly, I hope you guys had as much fun as I did on Sunday’s Chemical Brothers show. Easily my favorite concert of the year. The LA Times did a nice little write-up about the performance, and, of course, I highly recommend you check out the Youtube videos of the show. Phenomenal stuff.”

OC Weekly Online | Finally, a Tenant for Triangle Square: A Music Festival
August 18, 2010
http://blogs.ocweekly.com/heardmentality/upcoming/finally-a-tenant-for-triangle/

Costa Mesa’s Sutra nightclub is one of the few establishments remaining in the prominently placed mall-turned-wasteland Triangle Square, and while we rarely think of Sutra as being a proper concert joint, it has wracked up some impressive music-venue cred: The past year has seen it host Lil Jon, the Crystal Method and LMFAO.  So it makes some sense that Triangle Square is giving itself over to a music festival for an entire two days, and that part of the festival will be hosted at Sutra. And the lineup isn’t too shabby.
Sept. 4 and 5 will bring the vaguely named Pacific Festival: OC to Triangle Square. Saturday’s lineup includes hipster DJ icon Steve Aoki, Swedish popsters the Sounds and inventive, buzzed-about hip hoppers Chiddy Bang (recently spotlighted in the Weekly here).  Aoki himself, a Newport Beach native, is among the brains behind the festival. Tickets start at $40, more details here. Line-up from the press release below:

Saturday, September 4 line up: Steve Aoki, The Sounds, Miami Horror, Alan Braxe, Chiddy Bang, Classixx, Lifelike, CC Sheffield, Runaway, Justin Miller, Woolfy, Human Life, Cassette, Them Jeans, Cosmic Kids, HammerwolF, FiFiNasty, Kedd Cook, Brazzabelle, Bones, Morgan Collett, Lil Brandon, DJ Bob D, Sweatpants, Scorpion Breath, Kenya, C-Town, DJ Sanjay, DJ Miles, Dr. Schlongo and DJ DC.
